Detailed information about The Sound of Music can be found on the official Salzburg website.

The von Trapp family

The film The Sound of Music is based on the true story of the von Trapp family. Maria von Kutschera was a novitiate at Nonnberg Abbey, a Benedictine monastery in Salzburg. Fate had other plans for her, however, when an abbess sent her to widower Baron Georg Ritter von Trapp to look after his seven children. The two soon married and Maria, now the Baron’s wife, started a family choir at the beginning of the 30s that went on to give numerous concerts. The Anschluss of Austria with Germany in 1938 forced the family to flee. They eventually reached the USA where they started a new life on a farm. Overtime, they extended the farm to become the Trapp Family Lodge.
